@LetReasonPrevail1 I think I would going down is a good euphamism for the eventuality of the extinguishing of your existence.

Why do theists seem to have such an issue with subjective meanings? Existence is based on subjective meanings and there is no objective meaning in life, but so what? You lived your life, and you enjoyed it (I hope), what does it matter after you die?

Craig does OK until the end when he asserts that therefore our lives are "ultimately meaningless & nothing more than shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic". This is where I must call HOGWASH on Craig. Again, just because you can assert something with proper English doesn't make it one bit true. This is all Craig does. As such he FAILS again and again to prove anything. Bla, bla, bla

1:03-1:26 How is he sure we can't find a solution for this? So the only meaning is do what SOME GUY SAID a deity said to do , and don't ask any questions? No morality, no purpose, just stroke the deities ego? Being part of a deity's ego stroking puppet show seems kind of demeaning to me. What's wrong with being caretakers of life, our solar system and the universe? Again, how does he know there isn't a way around the end of the universe? Even the bible just suggests it's magically avoided.

Religion (all of them) is the greatest FRAUD in all history. The 3 most sinister and barbaric books ever written are the Torah, Bible and Qoran - versions of the same mythological stories.

@eddiedko Do I really believe there is nothing for me after I die? I reject the question, because I do not believe there *is* any such thing as a "me" after I die. Who I am is encoded in the current configuration of neurons in my brain. Once the power goes off, so does my consciousness. Who *I* am ceases to be. Allow me to ask you a question in return: do you really believe there was nothing for you before you were born? "Jesus is the only truth" - What does that even mean?
June 5, 2010 - 4:55 AM
@eddiedko How could I possibly think anything other than that we die? Everything eventually moves from a state of order to chaos eventually. That's the laws of physics. We die because our bodies age, like anything else. Our bodies repair themselves, but not perfectly. What is the point of living? Technically to pass on your genes to the next generation. If you're asking what your purpose should be, you make your own purpose. Make the world a better place have fun.

@mistermucky17 John said Jesus is the light. if you are with the light, the time will stop. when you die, you could be with Jesus. forever being happy and graceful is possible. it's very easy. Jesus is the only way

@IRBMe why do you think you die? what is the point of living? to see amazing wonders in the universe? do you really believe there is nothing for you after your death? it's not so hard. Jesus is the only truth

So it seems that he believes in God because he has to have meaning in his life. That's like saying I believe in Santa because I have to have presents at Christmas. Wanting something doesn't change the facts. The word "meaning" should be called into question. A better word would be "purpose". We have a purpose. To evolve into the best species possible. That's all there is, sorry if it disappoints but to think otherwise is delusional.

Why would I want my life to have any meaning/purpose in which I have no say? I'd much rather be pointless than enslaved by destiny, fate, or some higher power.

@100huntley - Come on , 100huntley - you are trying to spin IRBMe's word choice into a qualitative argument for the existence of a deity. That's semantics. Any word one might choose in it's place, to express some form of gratitude, could be similarly manipulated. fortunate - bestowed by the goddess Fortuna. grateful - to whom? The map is not the territory and the words are not the things. Language is imprecise and exploiting that imprecision is not an argument for god.

Why does there have to be objective meaning to life? Theists keep answering questions which have no objective reason to be asked in the first place. Subjective meaning in our lives is clearly an ego construct. Many explain their existence in terms of fulfilling a purpose, usually within human society. "Objective meaning" is just a projection of that ego construct, on to the universe at large. Our egos just can't accept that they are not special, in the most cosmic and far reaching sense.

His point was that people like you believe in those bizarre, hopeless notions. Thank you for confirming his point.
March 14, 2010 - 12:20 PM
In other words, your only rebuttal is a string of expletives, because deep down you know he's right.
March 13, 2010 - 6:08 PM
"Objective meaning" is somewhat of a oxymoron. Same as objective beauty.

You are using termonology that your worldivew does not afford you the luxury of utilizing meaningfully. The term "meaning" is void of any substance for you and the concept of something being worthwhile can only exist hypothetically in a world utterly different from the one you claim is the one we live in. If you agree with Craig up until the final seconds, how do you warrant disagreeing with him after that? How do you avoid nihilism? It seems to me that you couldn't possibly.
